What is a One-Shot Library Workshop?

Definition
It’s a “task focused training session. A one-shot, for example, might focus on helping library users find a book in the catalog, locate primary source material, or evaluate websites. The library instructor’s main contact with the learners generally begins and ends with the one shot workshop.”

Students will be able to effectively use the Mendeley program to:

  • – Organize research
  • – Effectively document research in Papers

Objectives:

  • 2.1.d. Selects efficient and effective approaches for accessing the information needed from the investigative method or information retrieval system
  • 2.1.d.i. Successfully uses available programs and resources to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the research process*
  • 5.3.a. Selects an appropriate documentation style and uses it consistently to cite sources (L/C)
  • 5.3.a.i Uses appropriate resources to determine and maintain appropriate documentation style.*

Materials:

  •  University of Pittsburgh Mendeley© Libguide/Research Guide
  • “Getting Started with Mendeley” Document (Provided by Mendeley with initial download of Mendeley Desktop, and in print by instructor in class)
  • PDF’s on Desktop/ in Folder to show various aspects of Mendeley

Student Expectations:

  • Students will download Mendeley Desktop Program/ Application before class starts using the download link on the Research Guide

This workshop builds on the Mendeley One-Shot Session, with hands-on activities detailing important things you might use the desktop version of Mendeley for.

Students will be able to effectively use the Mendeley Desktop to:

–          Add Citations to Mendeley Desktop
–          Add Files to Mendeley Desktop
–          Organize Citations in folders
–          Use Mendeley to create bibliographies
