Preschool Awesome Outreach: Germantown Elementary

schoolphoto_gertowesOutreach at AACPL is an opportunity for staff members to get into the community and bring the library to those who may not have experienced it yet. We talk about libraries, what we offer, and do a storytime much like those we do at the library, but shortened to about 15 minutes per class. We typically do 3-4 classes in a day partnered with another staff member.

Housekeeping Talk about the Library

How do you handle a book? Where shouldn’t you take it?

How many people have checked this book out? [Hold up book we’re reading later] (43?) See the condition of it now? Why do you think we take care of our books to keep them looking like this?

What is a library card? Who has one? [Show my Library Card that hangs on my ID]

Is the library free? How long can you check a book out for? What happens if you don’t bring it back?

What kinds of things do we have at the library? Books, eBooks, Computers, Board Games, DVDs, CDs, Playaways, Garden Passes, Storytimes, Programs and LIBRARIANS!

Fingerplay: Open, Shut Them

Open, shut them, open shut them

Give a little clap, clap, clap

Open shut them, open shut them

Put them in your lap, lap, lap

Creep them, creep them, slowly creep them

Right up to your chin, chin, chin

Open up your little mouth,

But do not let them in!

My head is quiet, my shoulders, my knees, my lips

My hands are in my lap, and now you are ready for another story.

Fingerplay: Tommy Thumbs

Tommy Thumbs are up, and Tommy Thumbs are down

Tommy thumbs are dancing all around the town

Dancing on my shoulders, dancing on my head

Dancing on my knees, then tuck them into bed
